For a title that’s supposed to wrap up storyline’s from Whedon’s Astonishing title, this comic looks, and is paced like a children’s comic.  Half-cocked snappy patter, Beast looking like more of ALF than an X-man.  This title just doesn’t feel right for some reason.  I really wish the story had been handed to a more fitting creative team, because I think the art team is good, but on the wrong project.  And, thus far, I haven’t connected with a full issue of anything I’ve read by Gillen.  There are moments of his that I enjoy, for instance the drunk Lockheed in the last issue.  But I mostly find his characters don’t sound at all true to me.  It usually reads like clipped sitcom dialog.

  1. Couldn’t disagree more.

  2. I, also, couldn’t disagree more.

  3. I recognize that a lot of people on this site are huge fans of Gillen, and that’s cool.  He just doesn’t do it for me.

Out of curiosity, aside from the writing, did you guys enjoy the way Beast was drawn?

  4. It bothers me as much as Quitely’s beast(And his run on New X-men is one of my favorite thing from Marvel). I laughed at first, but I know its going to get better. You can actually see an improvment from the first time we see him in #1 to the last time we see him in #2. Check it out.

I’ll give you that the characterizations and voices are sometimes a little off(nothing that can’t be fixe with experience), but I think the pace and the angle is fresh and young(yeah like a kid comic, but an awesome kid comic). Thats it, its a comic that I would of love when I was 12, cause its crazy smart out of of this world action stories. And thats what I still love and want out of Marvel comics.

  5. @rockingeek: I didn’t mind Quitely’s beast that much, because the story gave a reason why he was starting to look different.  There’s no context for that in this story.

As for the pacing and fresh angle, I agree that that’s there.  I just think, instead of this in-continuity story, they could have made this an actual kids’ book, and I would have enjoyed it more.  I’m much more forgiving of clunky writing when something is directed at a younger audience.
