Okay, the art is still crap, and the story only salvaged a 3 rating on the last page, but this was better.  A good amount of the dialogue was still clunky and the two pages of aliens being rounded up for deportation was pretty tedious, but there were some really solid moments in this issue – particularly the final page.

And honestly, the art isn’t exactly crap.  A lot of it is actually quite good, but the most glaring problem is that Sanders seems to have no talent for drawing faces.  Pretty much everything else is actually fairly competent and at times compelling.  But I suspect that probably just about the worst thing for an artist to be bad at in comics is drawing faces and this shortcoming really detracts from the story.  It’s hard to take the appearance of Cyclops and Emma Frost seriously when they both look like they’ve both got a mouth full of lemon juice, and it’s almost impossible to ever get a read on Agent Brand because of how little detail is put into her expression.

I liked this enough to give it another month.

Story: 3 - Good
Art: 1 - Poor

  1. I completely agree with this assesment.  I don’t think the artist has no talent, he just doesn’t seem suited to this title.  Which is also how I feel about Gillen’s writing.
