The Red Skull is an iconic character and one of the original fictional nazi villains which have become extremely popular in all sorts of fiction.
However, despite being an early inspiration for many great villains of fantasy in literature and cinema over the years, the Red Skull had never been on my list of greatest all-time villains simply because he seemed to be so unabashedly evil. But this first issue successfully illustrates how real-world evil can manifest in the early years of one's life. This feat is accomplished because the story wisely places the boy who will grow up to be the Red Skull into a time and place within the historical context of Germany in-between the two world wars. In structuring the Red Skull's origin as being deeply intwined with the origins of the Nazi party itself, Greg Pak makes sense of the truly evil aspects of these individuals as a collective--and by extension, the Red Skull himself, as a singular representation of the Nazi movement. Indeed, this tale of a young Johan Schmidt is all the more horrific due to its rich grounding in reality.
In short, this work successfully makes the case that a villain as senselessly evil as the Red Skull might not be as unrealistic as we might think, and truly: what could be more terrifying that that? In short, this appears to be the beginning of a fascinating miniseries, that may in fact be as educational as it is well plotted and illustrated—just be prepared to have a little trouble falling asleep after reading it!
