Why oh why does this series have to end. The best thing about Batman’s world is his villains and this series went deep into one of them. Fabulous! How about a five part series for each one. Each one has an interesting story of their fall into insanity. I recall two Batman Animated Series episodes, one on Harlequin and one on Mr. Freeze, that tell similar stories to great effect. You feel for them at first but in the end loathe them as they continually choose destructive paths. There’s something there everyone can relate to. Batman is still cool in this issue, doing his do goodery, but he is not the story here, Penguin is, and Mr. Hurwitz never forgets that. The art is very dark; Penguin is always ruminating in near pitch black environments and even the action happens in the dark. It recalls to me a film noir with stark contrasts in black and white; all symbolic of the dark psychological subject matter. Mr. Kudranski seems to be the perfect choice for this book. What happens when you marry great writing with an art style tuned exactly to the mood of the story? You get a classic comic and this is one.
