This series contained everything you want in a comic book. Unique and compelling characters, conflict, love, tragedy.

I loved how Hurwitz portrayed Penguin in a multi faceted manner. He committed horrible crimes, but cared deeply for his mother and a woman he met while protecting her from ruffian types. Hurwitz balances these elements perfectly as just when the reader is tempted to root for Penguin to succeed, we’re reminded that he’s a twisted villain at his foundation. I feel I know this character very well and I want more.

The highlight of issue #5 is the art. It’s dark with amazing detail in the character’s facial expression that tells the story. There are many panels with no dialogue and none is necessary. Batman and Commissioner Gordon are handled perfectly.

I’m very sad to see this min series end. Yet, I can’t wait for Hurwitz run on Dark Knight and hope to see more of Szymon Kudranski in another book very soon.
