This was an in-between issue. I love the direction of the series, which now merges two related tales. The first is the fate of the new Nova Corps, featuring a gigantic number of new recruits with meager training. Unfortunately, they have the unenviable task of joining the War of Kings as a galactic peacekeeping force. Guess who fails miserably. The most interesting storyline here is that of Robbie Rider, who has been tasked with working in a remote tactical capacity. Robbie has to witness (albeit from afar) the fatal failures of his team, and he finally wonders whether his brother Richard was right about the poor choice to reconstitute the Nova Corps.
The second tale is that of Richard, who was left to die after having been stripped of Nova status by the Worldmind. He has been given the power of Quasar and is now attempting to negate the effects of Ego the Living Planet, who threatens Earth and other planets while recruiting. There is a great reveal towards the end of this issue that mandates that the next issue be read as soon as possible. Very clever, AnL.
I know nothing about the penciller, Andrea DiVito, but I found the work solid if uninspired. It suits this book, but if compared to the most recent Guardians of the Galaxy (the other chief AnL book), it is inferior. A little more detail would help distinguish the different Nova Centurions, and the facial expressions are just a bit simple. Still, the coloring is quite nice, and the overall effect complements the book.

Thanks for the review! It was very well done.
I just didn’t really get the big "reveal" at the end. Didn’t we already know that Ego was Worldmind? or is the reveal that Worldmind is actually Ego? I dunno…
Also, I get that Gladiator serves at the pleasure of the emperor, but I thought it was a little cruel that he cut a Nova recruit in half. It seemed a little out of character…
Thanks for the nice thoughts.
I don’t think we did know that the Worldmind was Ego. Ego was recently recruited into the Corps, but was not shown to be the Worldmind – at least I don’t think so.
Gladiator, as has been shown in the War of Kings/X-Men crossover, is becoming increasingly bellicose, despite the fact that he has nothing but disdain for Vulcan. I agree that he now seems like the biggest bully in the Galaxy (worse than Thanos or Terrax?).
Thx for the clarification, coltrane!
So was the Worldmind we got to know in this book ALWAYS Ego, or was he replaced at some point by Ego? And if so, has the Worldmind been destroyed? I’d assume he’s not, but with Abnett and Lanning you never know!
I believe that instead of the Worldmind taking over Ego, it was Ego that usurped the Worldmind.
@JesTr: That sounds about right!
have to say the Nova Corps going down like hand ninjas was entirley to predictable
First good issue of this book in about 6 months. This was a make or break for me and I’m glad I stayed with it. Hope it stays this good or I might drop this after WoK.
