When this book came out, I bought it on the strength of the Annihilation mini series and I haven’t stopped loving it since!  The characterization, the drama and the blue blazes! It all makes for a fantastic space soap opera.

This book does not belong in this decade but somehow it works. The adventures of Richard Rider fighting aliens and at the same time dealing with his family sounds like something out of a 70’s comic, yet here it is handled with such thought and care that it doesn’t feel dated!  In this issue, we start with  a flashback to when Richard was in the New Warriors.   I don’t know if it’s the way Abnett and Lanning write them but I really enjoyed the team.  The banter amongst the team while they were fighting was great.  It reminded me of  the X-Men in their heyday –  really enjoyable stuff.  If anybody can vouch for any old New Warriors books, please let me know.

For 20 issues now, I have been reading this series and I have not come across a single snag.  That is a rare accomplishment in a comic book these days.  If you love old school X-Men or Spider-man comics but with a modern twist, this is the book for you.  Hell, if you love superhero comics,  read this book!

  1. Excellent review.

  2. I can definitely vouch for the 1st series of The New Warriors.  There was an arc around issues 19-26 or so that dealt with Vance accidentally killing his dad and the subsequent trial that are awesome.  I have no idea if they are in trades but it is worth checking out.
