Despite being sucked into another company-wide crossover, Abnett and Lanning are hitting another home run in Nova. In one issue they manage to pick up the threads from Civil War with his family and their reaction to his new status. It was great to see him interacting with humans again, and especially his own parents. I loved Nova's relationship with his brother. It seemed very authentic to me, and I began to compare it to my own relationship with my brother.
With all the relationships and character development we have some great action too. I really liked the use of the skrulls in this issue. They are more of a shadow element, and are rarely seen fully in the light. This makes them seem more mysterious and more unstoppable. The interactions between Darkhawk and Nova were great, and I would like to see this become a duo that works together frequently. Finally we have the big suprise at the end with the "return of the worldmind." The surprise is who shows up when the reactivate the worldmind. I don't know if he was bonded to it at some point, or if this is something completly seperate, but I am definitly hooked to see what will happen next.
The art was great this issue, and I would have had a hard time telling two pencillers were on this issue if I hadn't read the credits. The two worked great together, and created a cohesive issue that gelled. This is a great issue that uses the Invasion to further its ongoing story, instead of letting the crossover take control of the book.
