This was a decent enough comic story with simple and mostly clear art, but I felt that it really suffered from its timing within the larger Batman story. For the first time we establish that Dick Grayson believes (knows?) that Batman is not missing but rather that he’s dead. So I kept wondering – does Dick think he died in the crash at the end of RIP (not very sensible), does he believe that he was killed by Darkseid, or was there a tragic jaywalking incident that will be revealed in a later story??? Seriously, if this is the post crisis DCU then apparently the only lasting impact from the world-wide devastation was Batman’s demise, and wouldn’t that be SUPER lame?! So I spent a good portion of the story wondering what I was supposed to believe was going on, and the rest wondering why I needed to read so many pages about Ra’s dwelling on the death of the Batman (aka “the Detective”). Overall, the biggest accomplishment of this story was to remind me of what a jumbled mess DC’s made of Batman, and how very disappointed that makes me, and I’m pretty sure that wasn’t Tomasi’s primary goal in writing this story…
