I was a little skeptical when I heard about this series, mostly because of the price, but holding it in my hands… it totally justifies the $6 price tag.  Before even mentioning the stories and art, just as an object, this is great.  Getting into the art and stories… most of them do a great job of keeping some sort of Golden Age feel while doing things that could never happen in the comics of those days.  Joe Casey and Bill Sienkiewicz’ Flip Falcon story is a perfect example.  The story is set in 2007 and references 9/11, but it is told mainly through old school thought balloons.  It deals with religion, a controversial topic, but does not make it an issue, it simply assumes that readers are Christian and simply uses this to move the story.  Sienkiewicz does his usual, amazing work that would never be given the time to be created in the Golden Age, but Erik Larsen’s colors pull it just far enough in that classic direction to make you forget that.  Speaking of Larsen, there are a lot of great creators working on this book, but it is clearly his pet project and the love that he put into it shows.  His Sampson story is my favorite in the book and is the closest to a Golden Age story, but even it updates the formula and ends up surprisingly touching.  If you love comics, this is a comic you need to pick up and a project that needs to be supported so we can get as many of these books as possible.

Story: 4 - Very Good
