Like many who enjoyed this run from years ago, I was looking forward to this release for quite some time. However, now that its in my hands, I cannot help but feel under-whelmed.

The story was well put-together and tied up nicely but I felt it was just too gimmicky:
Evil mastermind who has set-up an elaborate scheme to ransom the US? Check.
Titans asked to clean up the government’s mess or face endless legal issues? Check.
Titans surprised to discover that said evil mastermind has assembled a team of villains to match each Titan’s unique power set as well as know way too much of their personal history? Check.
The death/maiming of one or more Titans or their friends/relatives? Double-check.
Call me crazy but I was hoping for something less run-of-the-mill, story-wise…

Art-wise, its George Perez but its not GREAT George Perez. There are a few interesting layouts but nothing near the levels of the crazy hell-like sequences from ‘Terror of Trigon’ or the shoulder-to-shoulder, too-many-characters-to-count action set-pieces of ‘Crisis’ or ‘The Infinity Gauntlet.’

Overall, ‘Games’ is a look at what the creators would have done with the characters after their initial run ended, and as we have seen with the ‘X _____ Forever’ runs, they’re nothing if not interesting and thought provoking. This just seemed too phoned-in to hold it up as a seminal work. However, I, for one, do hope that this release does give Wolfman and Perez a chance to revisit their Titans again and hopefully push them to really deliver something great.

  1. Gotta admit that Games was a big disappointment for me. After all the hype and positive previews, I was expecting a classic, nostalgic throwback to the 1980s. It didn’t happen.

As stated, the story was surprising run-of-the-mill and the plot twist was so damn clichéd it was embarrassing that Marv and George went that route.

But I think the thing that really surprised me was George’s artwork. Granted, a lot of artists alter their style over the years, but this is not George’s best stuff. For a man recognized for his insane attention to cram in detail, it was a bit weird to see so many panels with no backgrounds. In a perfect world, it would’ve been great if George had ample time to pencil AND ink the book; but here, it looked like he was just trying to get the book out after having it drag on due to delays. Too bad as we all know what he’s capable of.

I’m pretty sure this is Marv and George’s swan song, but it’d be great if they took another kick at the can because Games was a bit of a letdown.
