Zachary Baldus’s art on this title took a while for me to get used to.  He draws the X-Men  remarkably different from what I’m used to.  This is not, necessarily, a bad thing.  But a lot of the panels near the beginning of the issue have solid color backgrounds, and I didn’t think his realistic faces, and smooth lines worked well with solid color panels.  Luckily, a few pages in, we get to see how the X-Men are handling the restoration of Legion’s sanity, and the pages that deal with that are just gorgeous.  From that point on, I didn’t really mind the solid color panels.

Story-wise, this issue is a vast improvement over the last arc.  Wells seems to have a better grip on the pacing.  I had planned on dropping the book after this issue, but between the art and the improved storytelling, this was one of my favorite books this week.

Story: 4 - Very Good
Art: 5 - Excellent

Comments

  1. I am curious about the art.  I started off not liking it, as you said, but if slowly grew on me.  I greatly appreciated the fact that Shan actually looked Vietnamese? (Am I right?  I couldn’t remember if it was that or Korean)  I’m upset that Dani’s Valkyrie powers were a one time deal?  I was hoping she would become a power player.  Oh well,  I’m still into this book.

  2. I too was thinking about droping it. But I guess I’ll hold on. At lest till that cross over with X-force starts. I want nothing to do with that.

  3. ugggh, no not me. I took a peak in the store and didn’t pick it up. I then met up with a friend of mine who bought it without realizing how bad the art was, and so I bought it off him for a dollar. I still give the art a 1.
