The math on this book is a no-brainer.
(Millar + McNiven + High Concept) 2.99 Price= Win
.....Well it should be anyway. Mark Millar is known for these crazy action packed ideas and McNiven is known for super detailed beautifully penciled pages. Is that what we are getting here? A lot of reviewers on this site are making this seem like a surface-y handjob of a story with sub-par art and a ton of curses. I will try to defend this book because i think it is better than the knee jerk reaction people are giving it.
The art is the biggest victim of these knee jerk reactions. Everyone is used to McNiven doing his Civil War look, his Old Man Logan look. Everyone expects that. Instead with this we get a Frank Quitely and Bryan Hitch inspired McNiven who is using the ideas of those two artists as well as his own style to create this. It isn't like McNiven, it's a new style we've never seen, now whether you like that or not is heresay, but the fact is, you can't deny this art is both talented and well drawn.
It is hard to defend this book's story, but I will highlight somethings that are good. A high society woman is scorned and instructs her son to exact revenge upon the man who ruined her life. That's a great idea. The scorned repressed high society female lashing out against her husband? Brilliantly hinted at.
The failing of this story is that these great ideas aren't explored. Instead we are treated to this son who is exacting revenge in a cold and callous manner, except he's constantly screaming obscenities that he normally wouldn't be given his upbringing. Millar's dialogue is the problem, instead of capturing someone who should be cold, calm and devious, he creates a character that for no reason is boisterous and flamboyant.
I will say that Millar has seen better days in terms of dialogue and execution of ideas. I think this is not him writing his best, but I will still support and buy this book, because I value new ideas, and there are new ideas presented here. McNiven is doing something new as well, and I'm in for the ride. It isn't my favorite McNiven, but to be honest with you, when isn't drawing the Fantastic Four, it'll never be my favorite McNiven. All in all, this book is valid, it is a creator owned book, and I would recommend it to people who like action movies.
