File it as a guilty pleasure with a ridiculously high glee factor. I should not be enjoying this as much as I am. NEMESIS unfolds with the garish aesthetic of a Michael Bay movie. But a good Michael Bay movie.

Issue #2 gets things going with a thankfully compressed origin story for the title character. It was brief, but totally effective.

The frustrating thing about “NEMESIS” is that it feels like a rushed property that’s not giving full due to its intriguing premise. Mark Millar’s dialogue hits a couple cringe-inducing sour notes each issue. For example: Does it sound plausible, even in a superhero universe, for a genius with the tactical wherewithal to kidnap the President of the United States (as a secondary component in a larger plan) to taunt his opponents by yelling “Up your game, A**holes”? C’mon. Really? Nemesis should sound a little more Hannibal Lecter and a little less Professional Wrestler.

Just try to squint hard and blur out the shortcomings and enjoy the broad strokes, because it’s fun. But it could be much better.

Story: 3 - Good
