Whew. Ok, I’ve defended this book for more than a year in the face of cover-after-cover by Greg “realistic-but-no-soul” Horn that makes it look like a vacuous pin-up magazine. In fact, I’ve argued, this has been a great solo character book (with a good backup ensemble) that actually had something to say.

Well, whatever this book had to say, it seems to have been lost over the past few months. It took a really militaristic turn with last issue and that vein continues here. My guess? Editorial said we need to have a big, giant Skrull war here because it’s not happening in SI or the Avengers tie-ins. So it’s up to Captain Britian and Ms. Marvel to single-handedly kill the millions of Skrulls that are actually doing the invading while the rest of the heroes undergo Skrull psycho-therapy in the Savage Land.

The upside of this is it has allowed Carol to cut loose a bit and show what a bad-ass she can be (like last issue when she fired on the entire crowd of people to weed out the Skrulls). This issue continued the Skrull-killing action, and there was a lot of it. I have to admit I enjoyed reading it, but it was a bit like a piece of nougat, it lasted about 5 minutes and I wasn’t particularly eager to repeat the experience. I like nougat, but y’know, empty calories and all.

Adriana Meloni’s artwork is good, solid, but I really miss Aaron Lopestri and I wonder why I’m not picking up Wonder Woman now. Her Ms. Marvel is powerful and beautiful, but doesn’t have the same vulnerability that Lopestri’s had. Maybe it’s the new Ms. Marvel in these issues. Meloni’s layouts also facilitated the fast pace of the book, but there wasn’t anything that really stood out. In fact there was a fill-in artist for 6 pages in the middle of the book and I didn’t even realize it until later.

Anyway, it’s hard to recommend this book right now if you’re not already reading it, which I guess makes this review kind of pointless. I do like Agent Sum, though and I’d like to see more of him. Also, what happened to the rest of the team? And where is Anya? These other characters are what really made this book shine, and without them Carol is starting to seem a little dull (sorry about that).

  1. Nice review. Even though you don’t highly recommend it, It did pique my interest in the character.

I may check her out more in trade.

    I liked her Night Avengers.

  2. I’ve loved Carol since her stint on the "Heroes Return" Avengers and, come to think of it, I stopped reading that book after she left. I’ve really never read any of her solo title, though.

Would you guys recommend picking up the first trade or two before the SI stuff kicked in?

  3. Hmmm, trades? Well, truthfully, I picked up issue #1 and liked it but for a reason I can’t explain I skipped the rest of the Brood story and didn’t get back into it until issue 6 which was already a Civil War tie-in. But I thought Reed managed to make even the Civil War stories very good. I’ve been getting it ever since then and I would recommend everything up until SI. Actually MM is one of the titles that actually benefitted from Civil War I’d say. The results of it had significance to her professionally and personally (in opposite ways in fact). She was one of the only heroes who had a fairly adult reaction to the whole shenanigans. At some point I’ll probably go back and read the Brood story.

  4. um, yeah, first trade for sure. CW actually WAS good here. Vol. 3 and 4 are Lopestri so definitely worth a look. Plus Modok.
