Like many Fanboys out there, I have never been a huge fan of Thor, but have always been intrigued by his accompanying mythology. Aside from a brief collecting phase of his books during the Sienkiewicz run back in the mid '80's, I would only pick up an issue here and there. After seeing the recent Thor film, I thought I would check out the relaunch. So far I have not been disappointed. Actually, I have been pleasantly surprised. Fraction and Coipel have done an excellent job, whether on purpose or by accident, of loosely connecting the feel of the film to the action in the comic. Coipel's Odin bears a faint resemblance to Sir Anthony Hopkins, and the cocky bravado of Thor from the film has seeped into the comic as well. But this Thor, movie or none, stands on its own as a great action fantasy comic that is heading very quickly into a spectacular space odyssey with the inclusion of Galactus and Silver Surfer. The book also brings up a question rarely seen in superhero comics: in a world of gods that walk among man, where does the Christian God (and for that matter other modern religious figures) fit in? Fraction is handling this delicate subject matter very well, and in a very thought provoking way. I am anxious to see where this team is taking the God of Thunder, and where these storylines will take the readers as the series matures.
