I Killed Adolf Hitler is my white whale.

I’ve been trying to find this trade for as long as I can remember. It’s not just because of the interesting title either. It’s because I am a huge fan of the man simply name Jason. His style of art is truly one of the more unqiue styles in the industry. It’s kinda hard to explain, but it’s so simplistic it’s just a joy to look at. I’ve read a lot of his other collected work such as Living and the Dead or Last Musketeer. Now we have a new hardcover with some more of his amazing work.

Jason has a very bizarre style of humor. Sometimes it’s dark, other times it’s slapstick. Heck sometimes he’ll mix the styles to truly get a laugh out of you. The stories collected in this trade have a great amount of humor in them. Specifically the self titled story where it’s a ‘High Noon’ parody for the most part. Instead of a gunslinger going back into town to kill the sheriff; he instead wants to get back at the guy for beating him in chess. Never before have you seen a more intense play on a checkerboard. But there’s just a lot of surreal moments through out this story and others. Also a lot of awkward silences as well, which kinda fits because the diaologue is a bit sparse in these tales.

Other stories like ‘Emily Says Hello’ is a mystery all it’s own. Or the tale ‘&’ has Jason lining up two stories side by side to an ending that merges them together. I like that style of storytelling where one side of the story is one character, while the other side focuses on the other. Most of these stories have the same dog like creature, with some random birds thrown in on the mix. Again I just like the more simple style of art Jason provides. Sometimes the background are really detailed but for the most part it’s usually empty panels.

I will find my white whale eventually. For now, I urge anyone to try this man’s work in the future. If you like humor or more experimental comic books; then you’ll love this trade and others. Or if your a fan of the surreal, then this could be a work of art for some of you.
