This book surprised me. Correction; it pleasantly surprised me! I read the preview on IGN and was kinda turned off by it. However I decided to read the whole thing at my LCS to get a better feel for it and ended up really liking it. If you think Larfleeze can’t hold his own series, I use this to refute your claim. I’ve loved the character since he first appeared, frankly I’m curious why DC didn’t do this sooner.
The story: Larfleeze is a hoarder. Now he’s lost almost all his possessions save for a smartaleck robot butler. Now he stares into the abyss and decides to tell his life story one last time. I thought I knew his story already, but I was wrong (thank goodness, an origin story I don’t know and that I actually enjoyed seeing). I loved the book’s irony, dark humor, and ironic dark humor. Did I mention it’s funny? Well, it is if you like the kind of humor used. It’s a little like a toned down “Todd, the Ugliest Kid on Earth”. So yeah, I thought the book was funny, I LOLed sitting in my store a few times. It also made me feel for Larfleeze too, let’s face it he’s not instantly the most relatable guy. Thankfully the book didn’t over do it, Larfleeze may have had a rough life but he’s still Larfleeze; the Mighty, the Unstoppable, the Hungry! Actually that’s a change I thought was unusual, Larfleeze seems more maniacal and seems to like shouting his greatness to everyone. I found that part funny too, I’ve just never seen it before.
The art, it takes some getting used to. I thought it looked really rough when I saw it, but as I read on I thought it fit the story really well. I think Scott Kolins as grown alittle from his Flash days which is good. When I finished the story I couldn’t think of another artist I’d want to draw this book.
I wish that I could’ve bought this yesterday, but it’s sitting in my pullfile waiting for me. AND IT WILL BE MINE, MINE, MINE!!! It was really good, and funny, and I liked it. And only $2.99.
You don’t need to read GL, or Threshold, or have read anything with Larfleeze before to follow this. It can add to your appreciation but this is prefect for a newbie. I like that this is kinda it’s own thing; this is a guy that’s a loner and doesn’t like sharing things. Why would he share the spotlight with any of the more well known lanterns? If you pick one new book to try this week, I recommend this one.

Hmm… I’ve never been fond of the whole “Bwahaha” thing, and it seems like it’s just more of that here… I think I’ll wait for trade.
I suggest you give the first issue a shot, the “bwahaha” is less than 5% of the book. Out of all the new series I’ve tried, this is the first I’ve liked immediately.
Put Kevin McGuire on this thing and make it pure gold.
