Despite only being Tuesday I am still able to bring an advanced review of Kick-Ass 2 issue 2. Now that clearly means I have used a time machine to get my copy before returning to the present to inform the internet of my oh-so-important opinion… Either that or it’s already been serialised in CLiNT here in the UK.

So how does the issue itself hold up? Well that depends entirely on your tastes with regards to Millar’s work. Millar’s shocking-in-your-face style is still on display, although it is toned down compared to some of Millar’s other work, and it leads to a few quite funny jokes. As for the story itself there is some nice character interaction between Dave and his friends that really works well in playing with the “regular guys as heroes” side of the story. There’s also some character work with Hit-Girl and the new Justice Forever that make it a solid, if not spectacular, second issue.

The art is a bit more of a problem however. Whilst it is clearly has a Romita’s look it feels a bit flat, dull and, dare I say it, unfinished. There’s a few moments and glimses where his art shines but in contrast to what Romita can and has done before it feels pale in comparison.

Overall this issue is more of the same for Kick-Ass and if you’ve enjoyed the last book, the movie and the last issue then this issue will be like Lynda Carter’s body with Nathan Fillion’s brain covered in chocolate and holding advance copies of the Thor and Captain America movies. If however you don’t like Millar’s work then this issue won’t change your mind and for you will probably be more like Charlie Sheen naked and describing intently the feel of his turds for you…
