Geoff Johns is a man who can almost write anything and make it good. Heck I’m sure he can pick up the most least pulled issue in DC and make it a 5 star book in a matter of 3 issues. But he did start out small in his career, it wasnt like he was always the god like we perceive him to be. Although it would be his Flash run that would make him get notice; there was another gem that few paid attention too. His first run on JSA made waves on how talented he really was. I mean, he came on write after Robinson; and whether you like that guy or not you gotta admit…he had big shoes to fill. Over time he would make a memorible run, but people wouldnt focus on it too much.

But now he returned to one of his first titles and with Alex Ross’s help later on: JSA has now become one of the most entertaining titles that comes out. Johns knows how to write Golden Age character, which most of these main characters are. His take on Alan Scott, Jay Garrick, Power Girl, and others are even better then what most other writers could do with them. He’s made these essentially B or C list characters more revelent in the DCU. Of course we get introduced to new characters like Wildcat’s son, Cyclone, and the best member ever: Starman. That crazy Legion character is the best thing to ever happen to this title. This book entirely has a great sense of humor, but when we get down to the drama and action…it happens deep. It’s a great writing style as we deeply care about these characters when the sh*t hits the fan.

But of course the art is just as good as the writing. Eaglesham is one hell of an artist, he’s been cycled around many titles but this is where he has made himself a name. He adds much detail in the characters, but never too realistic to take us out of the experience. The action is fluid and never too confusing to figure out what is going on. Heck, with the roster that is in this TPB; and for even future additions to the roster; Eaglesham is just perfect on drawing these heroes.

I havent even touched on all the other great characters like Mr. Teriffic or Hourman. This paperback only carries four issues, but it’s so dense with story it’s just too much to talk about everything. If you think that’s a bad thing, it isnt, I love how Johns can write so many characters and get away with it. But if you think it’s ridiculous now, wait to you get into the ‘Thy Kingdom Come’ arc; I believe (and I’m not sure on accuracy here) about 1,000 new members join. Either way this is a fun title and it only gets better from here. You are missing out on a great series if you havent already picked this up.

Story: 4 - Very Good
Art: 5 - Excellent
