My history with the JSA has been spotty. I started reading the book when Johns first relaunched it a few years ago, but left the book during The Lightning Saga. After that, I bought a few issues during Thy Kingdom Come, but quickly lost interest. So, when I was in the store yesterday, it took me a while to convince myself to pick this book up. I ended up buying it because I’m always interested in trying out new writing teams, and the art looked pretty good. Suffice to say, I’m pretty glad I did.

I found this book to be a really fun read. Maybe because I wasn’t as in love with Johns run as everyone else, I’m able to appreciate the way this book is put together a little bit differently. I loved the storytelling in this issue. The story has some fun moments in it, but does an excellent job balancing the two different story threads together. The action is spot on, and it does a great job of trying to feature the many characters.

What really sold this book for me though was the art. I thought Merino just killed this book. The amount of characters and details he packs into each of these panels is astounding, and the two page spread of the JSA and the villains is a real visual treat. I will continue to buy this book as long as he continues to do such an amazing job drawing it. It definitely lacks the Golden Age whimsy that Eaglesham had when he was drawing the book, but I still loved this art none the less.

Story: 4 - Very Good
Art: 5 - Excellent

  1. I agree that Mr. Merino’s artwork is a considerable improvement over what came before it.

I also felt the new writers brought a freshness to these characters that was badly needed.

I also found this issue quite fun.

I guess I don’t need to write a review. Well done.

  2. @stulach~ Ha!  No prob.  Glad you enjoyed the issue.

  3. It was a solid book. The only thing that bothered me was the ambush premise. I just don’t see that collection of baddies having the goods to take on the JSA. GL can’t beat the wood character. Fine – just switch matchups and have Flash or Power Girl take him out.

Otherwise, suspending disbelief, I’ll read the next one.

I’m with you on your take on the art. Not the same as Eaglesham, but very tight nonetheless.
