First off I’d like to address the positives of this issue; Merino’s art was gorgeous. There were a great couple of pinup pages, the man draws a lot of characters and he really holds it down. The panel placement is done really nicely, and all the art has a lot of room to breathe, really well detailed, down the Ted Knight Starman poster in the new kid‘s room. The sepia coloring on the WWII flashback scene was well placed, all in all, the art in this book was great. Now to move on to the story. I’m going to preface this by telling you I just came off a huge JSA kick, rather than reading the fill in stuff between Johns and Willingham/Sturges, I went back and read the first eighty some odd JSAs that Johns wrote, and while they started off a little… eh in the beginning, I kept the faith and turned out to love it. I ripped through the entire series within the week, fantastic stuff by Geoff. Now when I opened this, John’s JSA still very fresh in mind, it the contrasts between the creators very clear. Johns has a talent for making exposition undetectable, blending it into the story masterfully, see either rebirth title for confirmation. The first 10 pages of this issue felt like exposition. Everything was explained in a way that it might as well have been written in an editor’s note. This team is a family, and it doesn’t feel that way anymore, the dialogue feels forced, and the characters are being told things that they should really be aware of already, they’re no rookies. Best examples - Stargirl is unaware of Obsidian observing all within the brownstone, she now doesn’t want to shower, cheap joke, not at all in keeping with the family vibe of the team. Wildcat having to explain “standard doctrine where hostages are involved” to Tommy, who has been a fairly large player in the book since its reboot. Our two new characters - the All-American Kid, who Mr. America can “hardly believe” is the great nephew of the original Mr. America’s Sidekick!!! And King Chimera, who I know nothing about, but just seems like your clichéd dick, too good for his teammates. Now onto the ten page fight scene. I think the first time I saw a double surprise team attack was in Justice League the animated series, Batman busts in, Villain says “I brought my friends“, Injustice Gang appears, Batman says “Gee, I wish I’d thought of that,” JLA busts in, the fight begins. Willingham writes about a paragraph of dialogue between Wildcat and “Tapeworm” to express this. Why? I’m assuming he forgot that art can be used to tell the story. Now I enjoyed the Flash narrating the fight scene because I needed half the villains identified, even though it did feel a bit; clunky and melodramatic. My only other itsy bitsy complaint, did the All-American Kid have to say “obey-obey-obey-obey-obey-obey” while stabbing Terrific? I really understood that he was under mind control when his eyes changed color and said obey the first time, I swear! However I could’ve loved this book, warts and all. If Alan’s villain would’ve taken a play out of the Guardians of the Galaxy book and screamed “I AM BLACKBRIAR THORN!!”
Story: 2 - Average
Art: 4 - Very Good
