I’m glad to see this book is
going to keep the level of quality and subplots going, at least for a little
bit.
I’m not a fan of Ordway’s art at all, normally it looks about as dynamic as cardboard to me, especially in last year’s annual. However, this issue it really worked. Hourman punching the darkness looked really cool, even though it did seem to be ripping off Stern Masters of Evil Avengers storyline.
I do have a few questions about the story though. How old is Courtney? If she’s not at least 18 by now, then it’s just really creepy developing her romance with Atom Smasher. Hell, it is still creepy unless he’s only 21. Additionally, when did Judo Master learn English? Last, I remember she barely spoke Japanese and did that Batgirl, read body language thing.
The actual story was fine, though a little generic. Todd’s trying to protect the place without telling the people what the threat was came off as plot device more than anything else. I hate it when characters just don’t explain what the problem is when they obviously have the time to. Is it like Beatlejuice? Will the threat manifest if you talk about it?
With the actual reveal of the villain, we run into a problem that Steve Roger’s Cap would often run into. How do you bring in WWII era villains in the modern era and not have it cheap? I like the idea of ghost villains in theory, and as much as I’m bitching, I did like this issue, so I’m willing to give it a shot, but I’m just saying it should not become a recurring theme.

Good review. I would’ve tried this before Sturges/Willingham comes out but….I hate Ordway with a passion. Not a bad cover though by him.
I understand. The annual this year was so horrible, but really this book was good enough
@changing: Its not just that annual. That whole Black Adam arc had his talent all over it….or should I say ‘lack of talent’?
