Cute. Yes, a serious comic can be cute.

Here is the story of Stargirl’s surprise birthday party. Stargirl is one of the most entertaining characters in the gigantic hodgepodge that makes up the Justice Society, and it is obvious that Geoff Johns has deep affection for her. Johns showed similar affection for Liberty Bell early in the JSA run, when he showed her ski trip interrupted by a crime. The current book is fun, simply because the party was not interrupted. However, there were a series of flashbacks and fun interactions between characters that were really entertaining.

I sincerely hope that the sentimental nature of this book is not lost when Johns leaves. At its best, it has been a labor of love for him, as he integrated the oldest of the DC characters with the newest, often of his own invention (or new incarnation).

And who said that Eaglesham is best drawing action scenes? I happen to love his goofy Starman and slightly creepy Citizen Steel. He may have gone a little line-crazy on Alan Scott and (especially) Jay Garrick on this issue, however, as they appear to be shockingly old. Still, what could be more entertaining than the brilliant page in which most of the team sat in for Stargirl’s orthodontic appointment?

Sometimes the nostalgia starts early.
