Well, I'll admit that I am as shocked as anyone. I have sincerely disliked this arc...until now. Somehow, like Montana down 13 with 5 minutes to go, Johns pulled out a fantastic win.
For those who do not know, the current JSA arc (concluding with this issue) has dealt with the corruption of the Black Adam family. While I am not incredibly well versed in the intricacies of Captain Marvel, I must complain that I was often confused. It was obvious that Isis had been corrupted and that Mary Marvel had become part of the Black Adam power stream. It turns out that it really doesn't matter. What does matter is that the Flash (Jay Garrick), working with Billy Batson's father, was able to return Shazam to life, setting in motion a series of events resulting in a negation of all of the Marvels (for now, anyway). The story was heroic, epic, and exciting. Ordway's art (not as fun as Eaglesham's, but good) worked well here.
And the ending was just great. The "core members" of the JSA had been meeting in order to determine how to cull the team. And their ultimate decision - really the only one that could be made - everyone stays. The JSA is family, and family doesn't abandon family.
Nicely done, Johns.

Story: 5 - Excellent
Art: 4 - Very Good

I am for the Marvel family, and this is all bias coming out but:
This was a horrible story arc. This issue didnt save it, it helped bury it. For shame on Johns and Ordway to pretty much say a ‘fuck you’ to the Marvel family and utterly destroyed them. Now I know Captain Marvel is still out there (Freddie) but he will probably lose his powers too.
Good review man but I gotta disagree, now way was this a 5.
I see where you’re coming from. I don’t know what it is that I enjoyed so much about this book, but I smiled the whole way through. Somehow Johns got away with what you are pointing out – he gutted the Marvel family.
