There's a lot of creators that stay on a book for far too long. Many "star" writers and artists will stay on a book well after they should based on the initial success of the run and will keep going when they should hang it up. In this day and age when creators are thought of as more important to the readership of a book than even the characters, this problem has become even more rampant.
If any of you think this applies to Geoff Johns and the JSA, I will slap you silly.
Geoff's run on the JSA may very well be the longest current run on a book DC has right now (I might be wrong but I do believe that it is the case) and when other writers would have burned out long ago, Johns is still churning out classic tales like it was coming out a machine. Think about this: since Johns moved to DC, he's written Flash: Blitz and Rogue War, GL: Rebirth, Black Reign, Infinite Crisis, contributed to 52, Superman: Up Up and Away, Sinestro Corps War, and STILL hasn't lost steam. His current run on JSA is no exception.
The tale of Kingdom Come Superman is further rolling along as we get some insight on how truly powerful he is via Hercules. We also get some heart-wrenching reminders of KC Superman's past through a flashback via Alex Ross. I don't know what's worse: the fact that Lois die or the fact that she doubtlessly died with that classicly eerie Joker grin on her face, burning into the memory of the Man of Steel that he failed to save from the most horrific death ever.
We also see Jakeem return and acknowledge in humorous fashion the white elephant in this book: the team is just getting too darn big. We're up to 22 members now and that could be either very good for this book or very bad. With Johns at the helm, I'll suspect the former, but it was still funny to see Jakeem point out very deftly that this team is heading towards a ludicrous amount of people.
We also get a glimpse of what the heck Gog has been doing this whole time as the Heartbreak Slayer. As far as I can tell, (and I could be wrong), the big purple head at the end is the true "Gog", an Old God of the Third World (as in the predecessors of the New Gods of the Fourth World) who somehow survived the slaughter of the Old Gods by Megeddon by coming to Earth and is now ready to claim power as the deity of Earth by wiping out the other "gods" on the planet (hence the title "Thy Kingdom Come"). If this is where Johns is going, this undoubtedly means a connection to the Death of the New Gods and, by extension, the Final Crisis. If this is true, then the game has only begun.
