Well, that was something of a miscalculation. This issue was intended as the big reboot, the return to flagship must read status and was being touted as such for about the last six months or so. Unfortunately it is not good, it's not promising and it's not even a little glimmer of what might be an interesting run. There is a mood setting beginning, featuring Blue Jay which hints at a mystery, with elements of the more obscure DC history and characters which Robinson can excell at. That then gets squandered on a meeting of the remaining members of the current team. Essentially Vixen has called them together to decide whether there's a reason for them to go on. Now, I don't care that the book doesn't feature the trinity characters. There's just as much chance that the second tier characters will have a chance to shine, so it's a shame then that they essentially stand around and whine in about as non heroic a manner as possible. Not only that but it becomes abundantly clear that the current status quo of the League is brought about by the events of Cry For Justice, a series that has several months until it concludes!! Which means that the whole endeavour comes across as completely rushed.
Then Despero crashes in and there's a big, pointless, boring, cliched fight scene. While I understand the symbolic nature of this historic villain's appearance, there should really be more point to it than we're shown here. Then to top it all off, rather than being allowed to build the foundations of this new team, Zatanna shoehorns in the Blackest Night crossover. Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't this title really go off the rails around the time it was made to interrupt it's story for other big crossovers like Final Crisis, didn't it really need to be allowed to find it's feet and it's identity again? I love Blackest Night, but this is not going to help this book find it's way out of the doldrums. I can only think that DC should have just waited. They could have put the book on hiatus while BN played out and Cry For Justice came to an end, and at that point Justice League might have had a chance to really explode out of the gate. Instead I find myself waiting for the next attempt, lamenting the great Robinson books of yore and turning to my stack and hoping for something gripping.
Art: 3 - Good
Maybe it should have been put on hiatus, but if they were going to keep publishing it this was the way to go because of Blackest Night. Robinson is just tying up some loose ends from the old series before starting his series and this time before the end of Blackest Night (and whatever new DC universe status quo it may or may not bring) was as good a place as any. You definitely did NOT want him to start his run, stop for Blackest Night, and then try and continue it with half his characters trying to adapt to whoever is alive and/or dead now. It would be a mess (also now known as a McDuffie). Unfortunately this means you will really have no idea what the new series will actually be like for three more months. C’est la vie.
