I liked the first arc of Justice League but it didn’t meet my superlative hopes for the series. I was hoping for some nuanced character work a la Mark Waid or Brad Metzler in the second storyline but that is so far lacking. The focus on Steve Trevor was an odd one given that it is hardly the time to introduce new characters when we have barely seen how the core team operates together. The old tensions between Green Lantern and Batman and the friendship between Green Lantern and Flash are present but that’s about it. Cyborg has a nice moment but Wonder Woman, Aquaman and Superman are total background noise. The humor is campy and eye-roll inducing. This is not the Justice League I was hoping for, this is the Michael Bay version.
The redeeming portion of this book is the Shazam back-up story. I already like Billy Batson and I think Shazam could add a cool magical twist to the new 52. My only concern is that I’m not certain a 10 page back-up can justify me keeping up with this title.

Story: 3 - Good

  1. I’ve never been into the Justice League but Jim Lee’s art drew me in. I liked the first 6 issues but issue 7 seemed to be a filler; as if they were putting it out to fill a space while they decided on the next story arc. Overall it was pretty blah especially without Jim Lee’s art. I’m still in and interested as long as Jim Lee’s the regular artist. I could careless about the Shazam back story, I’m not interested. Hoping for more story wise in the up coming issues.

  2. Give Shazam an on-going and use more pages for the JL, to tell origins of their villains, or to spotlight the other in-coming members of the team.
