I found this issue to be a disappointment. It was not a failure by any stretch – on its own it was a solid comic book read. However, I felt that a special focusing on Magog should give us some great insight into what makes this character interesting and special. On that front, it really did not.

Since Kingdom Come, we have known that Magog is vengeful. Here we learn that he metes out vengeful justice. We learn very little more. We also fail to learn more about the transition of the character from enlisted man to god-herald. Again, the cupboard seems a bit bare.

I really liked, however, the short story about JSA Starman. I had not known this origin story previously, and I am not a DC expert. I did read much of the Robinson Starman, and I believe that this is the “crazy” Starman character (i.e., not a cosmic rod Starman) from that era (someone please let me know if this is true). I enjoyed the treatment of the character in the JSA trade that was just released, and it is fun to have Johns fill in the gaps. The joke about the food in the asylum being one of the best experiences in Starman’s recent past is especially funny.
