Once again we have Kieron Gillen back on a Thor comic. Well he’s back on the same title, but for some reason they are calling this book ‘Journey Into Mystery’ now. Ignoring that confusing, we have to remember back when Gillen was on the title. Gillen’s run was filled with great moments but he seemed to be bogged down by: A) Finishing an abrupt leave of storyline by JMS and B) Being forced to tie into Siege. Now we have Gillen, surprise suprise, tie this into ‘Fear Itself’. But Gillen, other then the last two pages, seems to ignore that this is tied into Fear Itself and we got ourselves a great story on our hands.

First off I want to point out how laughable the recap page is. They just photoshopped a barely opened door and put it right in the middle of the page. I think they were going for a ‘Twilight Zone’ type of opening but….well it just looks laughable.

This story however, isn’t a laughing matter as Gillen gives us a great look into Asgard and Loki. Now I have no idea why Loki is back and why he is a kid. I’m sure it has something to do with Matt Fraction’s run, but it’s not too hard to follow once the story kicks in. In fact Gillen finally gives us insight with why Loki sacrificed himself during Siege. It has old Loki talking to young Loki and before you get confused it does give us great insight in the mind of the Trickster. There is also some great comedic moments with the Warriors Three and I loved the running gag of people exploding for no reason. Overall I think Gillen gives us great insight into the world of Asgard like he did before leaving the book in the first place.

Doug Braithwaithe is back as artist for Gillen and it’s so great to see his artwork have more ‘care’ to it. I meant no disrespect there, its just obvious that Braithwaite had to rush in his issues when Siege rolled around. Here he gives his painted style a run for it’s money and it fits perfectly for this book. This book goes all the well from Hel to the glory of Asgard and Braithwaite is able to make it all look gorgeous. Some credit should go to colorist Ulises Arreola, which keeps this painted quality going from beginning to end. The only thing I have a probem with is the faces Braithwaite gives to Thor. I don’t think it worked when he was on the book a couple of months ago and it doesn’t work for me now. He looks too ‘pigish’ if you know what I mean.

This was a great first issue for the ‘rebirth’ of Loki. Other then the last two pages this story seems to have nothing to do with ‘Fear Itself’. Well we’ll see how it goes in the future as the event goes on. As it stands right now though, if you want a great look into Loki and the other figures of Asgard in a Thor book, this should be the book your reading. I’m glad to see Gillen was able to tell his own story without an event or editorial bogging him down and hopefully it continues for issues to come.
