Finally! After four issues, I was starting to think sticking to issues was going to be this series downfall. It has stayed consistantly good, but like I mentioned in my Deadpool review, sometimes that can be a negative. With this issue though, we’re reminded just how amazing a fantasy comic can be with Grant Morrison.

The true star of this issue though is Sean Murphy. Again the art has always been consistantly good, but here we see just how amazing of an artist Murphy is. Just look how vast every panel is. The depth is just unbelievable. Murphy and Stewart (add him to be fair) can change the atmosphere on a dime. One moment we’re on a fantastical chase in the sky, the next we’re in a dark and dreary forest. I love the panel layouts in this as well, a lot of two page spreads in this. Sometimes that can be a pain, because it feels like your reading the comic too fast. Here, it’s completely the opposite and you have to take your time reading this. The highlight though for this entire issue was the big fight at the end. A great use of jumping back from reality to fantasy and it makes the conclusion all the more depressing.

With a Morrison comic, there still is a lot of whimsical nonsense. Hard to tell what is considering important or just plain bizarre references. The true crux though is the tail end of this issue. The moment Joe and Jack fight the monster (and the reality comes back into play), this issue was gold. Morrison just tears your heart out and the moment after the fight with Joe makes it even more sad. It will be interesting to see where Morrison goes with this series since Joe seems to be really close to fixing himself. I have a feel with only three issues left, there’s more then what meets the eye with this.

Story: 4 - Very Good
Art: 5 - Excellent
