Irredeemable goes out with a bang…or a whimper?

Before I can annoint Irredeemable as the new Watchmen for this generation I have to explain some of my thinking here.
When this book came out i thought it was bold in it’s execution. The whole idea of the most powerful being on the planet finally having ebough and turn on the planet he once protected is frightening enough. The levels he would stoop to were even more frightening.
But there was also a sense of humanity for the book. The origin of the Plutonian is epic and tragic. The scenes with his real parents were emotional and very strongly submitted for our approval.
And this has been hands down one of the best comics on the stands consistantlt for three years now, and even though I have not enjoyed every page, or plot twist or variant cover, I have enjoyed the ride.
Mark Waid should be commended for telling what amounts to an old DC Elseworlds story, where Superman, Luthor and Braniac could be exchanged for the major characters in this issue. He has managed to tell one of the most compelling stories in comics in a time when most creators re resorting to the major event mini series that start well and end with you scratching your heade and wondering what Bendis…I mean the wrter was thinking.
Diego Berreto has a nice style that is workman like and is nice to look at, not distracting but functional, and his job on this issue was very good.
That being said, the series finale left me slightly cold. I almost feel like the ending was just kind of thrown together or maybe the serieshad the plug pulled on it. Not the most satisfying of endings, but consistant with what has gone on before…

I will miss both this series and incorruptable and am thankful Mark Waid gave us this look into his cronenbergian world of super heroes

Story: 5 - Excellent
Art: 4 - Very Good
