The Plutonian has turned to the dark side. Why, and now what the hell do we do? Mark Waid should reveal the answer the first question in the opening arc of Irredeemable, his first superhero work from Boom Studios. The second question may take a lot longer to answer.
Waid's script shocks, taking a Superman analog and making him a cold-blooded murderer, even willing to partially lobotomize his former "kid sidekick." This is not Mr. Silver Age, but the writer of Empire at work.
The art is by Peter Krause, best known for his run on DC's The Power of Shazam! His style here is reminiscent of cover artist Barry Kitson, especially the facial expressions on the first few pages. He nails every important moment, and perfectly contrasts flashbacks to the bright past with scenes from the dark, dark present.
It's an intriguing start, and I can't wait to see how Mark Waid answers those two questions.
