Writer Matt Fraction’s work is hit or miss with me, but when it hits, it’s usually because he’s paired with an artist he can have a real cohesive voice with. Salvador Larocca’s pencils more than tell the story in this book, and while his work has been panned at times for being to referenced or stiff along with the coloring used in this series, it fits the character and technological subject matter to a tee. In much of Fraction’s other Marvel work, I feel like I’m hearing his voice rather than than character’s (a trait I see in much of Mark Millar’s work as well), but in Invincible Iron Man, his quirky snarkiness and smug inflection suits Tony Stark more than any other character he writes.

This series is an engrossing read in collected form, but even at it’s most plodding points when it’s mostly dialogue and character interaction and Tony’s rediscovering his inner self, the issue format has me clamoring to see what happens next…even if I sort of already know. That is great writing.

Will Tony Stark remember that he’s Iron Man? Most definitely. Will he redeem himself to become a hero once again? Indeed. I’m looking forward to see how Tony and his supporting cast realign once this Reassembled arc concludes.
