If you love Greco-Roman mythology and aren't reading this book, you are doing yourself a great disservice. Pak and Van Lente really, REALLY know their material. As in, they hit more details than just what one gets in a high school English class. But what is really great about this book is that they ALSO manage to tie these myth geek-out sessions into the Marvel U proper. The jury consists not only of notables from mythology such as Cronus and Semele, but also has Baron Zemo and (I think) the Abomination. And when Hercules threatens to spray them with Nessus' blood coursing with hydra poison? Priceless. And Amadeus' trip to the Isles of the Blessed features an "Aw yeah" cameo from probably the one and only inviolably dead character in all of comicdom, and it's only fitting that this person is in "heaven" and knows everyone else there; sadly, he says that it isn't hard since the numbers are rather small. Lastly, the concluding scene can only come from someone who really knows the Heracles/Hercules myth in and out, and these guys obviously do.
On art, Stegman and Buchemi do great art when it comes to individuals or small numbers of people; the drawing of Cronus eating his children is very evocative of the famous Goya painting, and I wonder if he drew inspiration from it. But when there are multiple characters or they are shown at a distance, the detail gets very muddy. Also, the spread of the Gigantomachy (they even call it the Gigantomachy- glee :) ), which should have been a killer scene, is over crowded with text boxes and too many bodies, thus muting the effect.
Here's an idea- when this team gets done with this series, if ever, could they do an illustrated "Edith Hamilton's Mythology," or do their own book without adapting someone elses. If it would be even half as good as Incredible Hercules is, I would not only buy it for myself but use it in the classroom. Their stuff is that good.
