An idea can take you a lot of places. Sometimes an idea can be good, sometimes an idea can be terrible. But sometimes an idea can be so original and so amazing it begs the question: 'Why hasnt anyone thought of this before?' An idea like this comes in the form of Incredible Hercules #129. That idea my friends, made it my pick without question.
What's the idea you ask? A New Jersey Casino is the home of the underworld....well that doesnt sound like much but that's just the start. What is the underworld doing in a casino? Simple: This is how the superheroes of the Marvel Universe try and get back into the living world. They have to bet and gamble their way to live again. What a fantastic idea! Why hasnt anyone thought of this before!? It makes perfect sense thanks to the clever writing of Pak and Ven Lente. I mean there are superheroes everywhere in this casino, everywhere. We get a moment for Herc to talk to Janet Pym, we see other B to C list heroes (like Goliath of Civil War fame), and of course....lots and lots of former X-Men. I need someone who reads this and is an X-Men fanatic to tell me who these people are. Cause there are a lot of them in the huge splash panel and subsiquent panels.
But there's more to this comic then just a fantastic idea. There's a ton of great humor thrown in as well. From Netflix's to Greek mythology; no topic is spared the comedic might of Pak and Van Lente. But also the mythology parts in themselves, with the history of how Herc turns into a God to Hera just talking in general is very interesting. There's more to this comic then just slapstick humor, there's good research as well and the writers should be praised for that as well.
This comic seems to be the stomping ground for artists. Cause there has been a lot of them coming and going within issues. Here we get Ryan Stegman for pencils and thank god he is good. He's not perfect, but he is a million times better then the crap we get the last two issues. Stegman does a good job with the backgrounds and making things more lively. But the faces can be a tad off-model and same goes from body shapes. I didnt realize Wasp had so much muscles and had green hair. But either way this is an improvement and maybe if he can stay on for more then one issue; he could improve over time.
Just like I said in the 'Love and War' review; you need to pick this series up. Not only can this be a funny comic; there is also enough creativity to make this just as great as any Marvel comic out right now. This series defines 'sleeper-hit' but I would love to see this more as a mainstream success then anything else. But as for now a perfect idea made this the best comic of the week for me. Now we know that if anyone dies in the Marvel U, at least they are having fun eating cocktails and listening to Tony Bennet in Atlantic City.
