I picked this up on a whim (I read and enjoyed the first two trades of Brubaker & Fraction's Iron Fist; been meaning to get around to the other stuff), and it was one of the more pleasant surprises recently.
Now, with Jason Aaron writing, you can usually expect a certain level of quality. Fat Cobra's origin sort of treads a line, since it does what is by now a fairly standard story device: gives a seemingly cheery character a tragic backstory. But it works, and the story ends by promising that he'll drink away the knowledge again and go back to being his happy self. And it's not just sadness; Aaron leavens this with a lot of one-panel mentions of fantastical adventures that has a very Fraction-esque feel (teaming up with Nick Fury to fight werewolves on the Moon, for example; or teaching Elvis kung fu). Aaron also hits on a really obvious but as-yet-unused joke: using the series' trademark captions for martial arts moves to describe other kinds of action. A bunch of different artists work on this issue, and it works quite well.
There's also a backup by Swierczynski following Danny, which will run through the whole series. It has a more urban feel, following up on Danny's martial arts dojo targetted at poor children. Travel Foreman's art is pretty good, though not as good as much of the stuff on display in the main story.
At 36 pages for 3.99, this is a very nice package.
Art: 4 - Very Good
If you enjoy this, I’d definitely suggest getting the Swierczynski issues of the book in trade. I actually read those first and then went back and read the Bru/Fraction series. The style’s a bit different but it all fits together nicely.
The only complaint I have about the backup in this issue is that there are 2 flashbacks in like a 6 page scene, and then it’s to be continued. I feel like it’s going to be hard to follow.
