After a horridly long break only satisfied by the Green Mist of Death one-shot, the Immortal Iron Fist returns to the main story. While one might have seen from the solicits, supposedly a tournament of the "losers" (Davos, Tiger's Beautiful Daughter, Dog Brother #1, and Iron Fist) was to take place, something that I was rather thrilled to see. That didn't happen. That's probably more the fault of the promo guys at Marvel more than Brubaker and Fraction's fault. Still, a battle royale I was promised and a battle royale I did not get. And that's disappointing.
Still, there was much to enjoy about this issue. Very key things happen in this issue. For one, Iron Fist finally confronts the uncle Nu-An on his corruption concerning the Randall Gate. Even before this particular series, the current Yu-Ti has shown to be an insufferable tyrant and has been leader for far too long. The only real surprise concerning the revolution is that it has taken far too long to happen especially since Danny is technically the rightful Yu-Ti.
The other family dispute in this series, between Lei Kung and Davos, takes another turn. On learning from Aman that Xao and Crane Mother have essentially betrayed him and are going to destroy the Seven Cities, Davos immediately confronts his father. Here, we see Davos, who has been progressively becoming less and less of a threat via his fights with the Iron Fists, Tiger's Beautiful Daughter, Aman, and now the Thunderer. It seems now Davos realizes the path of deceit and brutality he's used to survive on has come out to bite him big time and he really doesn't know what to think anymore. It's an intriguing thread and I'm wondering where Davos is going to fall on: his instinct to survive or his bloodlust against the Iron Fist.
There's one glaring thing wrong with this issue and it MUST be addressed. Why in the name K'un L'un did David Aja only do a measly THREE pages this issue? I'm fine with the whole idea of using different artists as to depict the separate time periods, but David Aja is the crown jewel of this team and to simply put him on three pages seems like an injustice, especially during the Davos/Thunderer scene. Nobody draws Davos better than Aja.
All in all, a very good issue. I, like every time I read this book, am left anticipating more. This book is truly something special and next issue should prove to be an all-out slobber-knocker between the Immortal Weapons and the Hordes of HYDRA.
