Jeph Loeb, at this point in time, has nothing to offer comic book anymore. I don't remember the last thing I read of his that I enjoyed, and I don't understand why he gets high-profile gigs. Take this book -- monthly fist fights between funny chromatic behemoths. If I wanted to see that, I'd visit my family on Christmas. The Ed McGuiness art is great -- it looks dumb, but it really isn't. It's quite smart, actually, and I think that he will always be underrated so long as he keeps praying at the altar of Adams. That being said, all the nuanced work being done with Thor by JMS over on the main title is tossed aside for a big DeFalco-like slugfest that caps off the last five issues of similar fights. And for what? Loeb is halfassedly weaving a "whodoesit" thread behind that pummeling, trying to make us care about who the Red Hulk is. Six issues in, even if it were Betty White I wouldn't care.
Story: 1 - Poor
Art: 3 - Good

By the time I figured out that Red Hulk was Doc Samson, I realized that he really wasn’t. Loeb’s writing was so transparent, even I was able to see what he was doing. McGuiness is talented, a given, but like McFarlane I think his best stuff is behind him, e.g., early issues of Deadpool Vol. 1. Nice review in that you used very appropriate references to JMS’s Thor and the "DeFalco-like slugfest". If you want to see the Hulk as he should be, pick up the Original Sin Prologue of Wolverine Origins.
i loved this issue and can’t wait for the next one. is it just me, or does it seem way longer between issues of this book as opposed to other titles? grrr… argh.
