Hit-Monkey.

One of those type of concepts you never thought would work. I mean it’s a silly idea really. How could a monkey be a hitman? Apparently quite well as we saw in it’s self-titled one-shot and appearence in Deadpool. If you love violence and monkies, then this could be the character for you. Now Marvel has given Daniel Way yet even more chances to write this new character. But has the magic run out for its third appearance?

Basically the humor in this is that, it takes itself so seriously you can’t help but laugh. The start of this mini-series literally takes places minutes after the one-shot, where Hit-Monkey wants to take revenge on the soldiers who massacred his tribe. With the help of a spirit (also from the one-shot) we get to see just how seriously and deadly this monkey can be. I love it how the spirit can clearly understand the monkey but we have no idea what he’s saying. There is a good amount of humor just seeing how serious Way is taking this. No slapstick humor, or monkey silliness; just a serious take on how if a monkey could operate guns. I will say the stuff involving the humans is, ironically, very boring. Although a surprising cameo happens at the end of this, the politics of these antagonists just didn’t keep my interest.

I really like the style of Dalibor Talajic art. It gives the comic a European style but not being too outlandish from other artists. Lots of detail in the panels and the jungle enviroments are very lush. It seems like Talajic colors and inks himself which he also does a good job with too. Although the faces are a bit iffy in places, but I think that’s just seeing a more European flavor in a comic book. The Monkey is extremely detailed and you can see individual hairs on it.

The concept of Hit-Monkey keeps getting legs and it seems like there is no stopping this beast. Although this might not be as special as the one-shot, it still is a lot of fun if you enjoyed that and the Deadpool arc. Considering who Hit-Monkey has to fight in this issue, this is probably gonna turn stupid really quickly. Nothing wrong with some stupid in your comics though.
