“He awakened to find himself saved. By monkeys.”

I’ve said it before but I will say it again. When you have an idea and you roll with it, you can really have a great comic in your hands. My friends, I think I have found a really fantastic idea and it’s all played serious. Hit-Monkey.

Now I admit I don’t have the same uber-love for monkeys as some people do, especially for comics. No offense to our friends just behind us on the evolutionary tree, but if I see a monkey I do smile but, I don’t freak out over them. But to have an origin of a monkey becoming the world’s greatest Hit…..monkey is just genius. What makes this comic so funny is that it plays so serious. There are no jokes here, no cracks at the premise, or monkey throwing their feces. It’s just a serious origin about a monkey learning to kill effeciently. I gotta give props to Daniel Way; not only is he the most consistant writer for Marvel (for ME, so let’s not go crazy here) and this was so well written. It’s hard to really describe the book because….it’s just so insane!

What I can say is that Dalibor Talajic is a great new ‘find’ by Marvel. So many artists seem to be medicore for the company, but here comes a great new artist into the fold. He brings his European style to mainstream comics in a lot of way. Characters are just beautiful to look at, both human and primate. Some of the most realistic monkey’s you’ll find in a comic. His panel layouts are pretty impressive too. I love the pages in the hot springs, or the hitman practicing his martial arts. Talajic style is just so unique and so different from so many artist. It really is a boon for Marvel to pick him up.

I’m not going crazy here. I’m not gonna say this is the ‘greatest comic book ever’, that would be insane. But what Daniel Way does here is pretty damn impressive in that: He made a comic fun and hilarious to read by being so serious and straight forward about it. Such a ridiculous idea has turned into something pretty sane by this one shot. It also helps that Dalibor Talajic provides his great pencils and layouts for such a ridiculous idea too. It’s not the best thing ever, but it did provide me the most entertaining comic of the week. Bring on the more Hit-Monkey fun in Deadpool #19!
