I’m at the point where I have no idea what the point of this mini is.

Is it about the Blood Queen coming back? Is it that Hellboy is now the rightful heir of England? Or that it’s the same old, Hell wants Hellboy but he doesn’t want to go, type of story? After reading this issue these are the questions I am raising.

We only have one more issue to go before the finale and it’s quite obviously this isn’t going to end. A friend of mine, stuclach on the site, informed me that there is another mini coming out next year, so this is what….The beginning of the true story? Cause all this issue was just ghosts telling Hellboy he needs to fulfill his destiny. Now I know that happens in every Hellboy story, but to me I just don’t wanna see it here right now. There is some big stuff going down in the Hellboy universe, thanks to the incredible last issue, and instead I get him trying to stop running hell again. It’s not what I particular want with this mini. So I guess you could say I find the pacing of this series extremely bizarre. (No I am not complaing about the hiatus, this is something completely different)

What keeps me interested with this story is the artwork by Duncan Fegredo. His work is just amazing and anything I would say now is what everyone has already praised about. Everything just looks so detailed and it keeps with the gothic vibe. Fegredo is probably the closest to look like Mignola’s art and we all know how beautiful his work is. There’s a panel with Hellboy imaginating of destroying a city; it’s so beautiful I would love to see it as a poster of some kind. Also, praise should go to Dave Stewart because the coloring in this is top notch. He deserves any award he’s nominated for, just a great use of orange/red/yellow into each page.

So we have one more issue to go and I can’t say I’ve enjoyed most of this mini. Last issue had an amazing revelation, but sadly that is not enough for me. The pacing is just irregular in this and it’s too hard for me to except I need to wait even further to read a conclusion of this. The artwork and the back up features keep me interested (a great witch story in this) but the story is ironically the worst part of this whole mini. Maybe Mignola should’ve tighten the script a bit before leading us in to an uneven story.

Story: 2 - Average
Art: 5 - Excellent

  1. I can see the points your making, but for me personally, I’ve really enjoyed this series a lot.  I think I appreciate Hellboy for its simplicity.  That’s what keeps me coming back.  The cool underlining tones and mystical elements of the story are delicious.  Hopefully this next mini stuclach speaks of will redeem this story for you:)

  2. Maybe you should read in trade.  Mignola’s telling a long, detailed story, and he’s not going to make a big reveal every issue
