There are other, possibly; better titles out there to choose for my Pick of the Week. Why is this, only a three part, Hellboy tale worth such a pick? For starters it has the best art on a book for this week.

Corben is one of my favorite artists today. He can make anything terrifying, and this issue is no different. Some of the most pants wetting creatures are in this book. Skeletons, ghosts, creatures….and that creepy ass Crooked Man is all in this tale. Not spoiling the last page but, that is one of the creepiest images I will have in my head for the next couple of days. But Corben also does well with the ambience of a book. Like Makoma, he is great with the backgrounds; as it just feels like your in a middle of a forest right now. Plus he does some of the best faces in the industry; almost adding a Bruce Timm like chin to all the characters.

The story is also just pure gold; setting in the U.S. for once is a weird setting by Mignola. He always does Europe, or now a days Africa; but he can do any urban myth from any setting. We get to see the uncertainty in Hellboy as this is one of his first big missions. We also get to see the creepy side of the land…and if you never seen ‘Delieverance’….well let’s just say either showing of the people is pretty bat-shit crazy.

I love Hellboy, maybe that makes it bias for me as this POTW. But this is such a great small tale that ultimately makes me love Mignola. His stories are filled with creatures, dark humor, and a great sense of appreciation of the locations and myths. It may not be the next step in Hellboy universe, but it is definitely worth your time as a fan and also a fan of horror. So sure, go make your POTW as simple as a Superman or Batman tale….as for me, well I need the lights turned on in my house since I got so scared shitless by this tale.

Story: 5 - Excellent
