The conclusion to Blair Butler's tale of ambition in the bone-crunching world of Mixed Martial Arts isn't what you'd expect. This isn't the tale of the underdog who defies all the odds and becomes a champion. This is something much more down to earth and poignant. This runs the gamut, from finding the courage to try something you're passionate about to the success that often accompanies the confidence of youth to what finally happens when you've hit the wall and find yourself falling down the ladder. This is a story that comes from a place of experience, and its lessons can be applied to life in general, not just life in the blood-spattered Octagon. The story completely blew me away, though sadly the artwork did not. Illustrating a comic is no easy task, but it just seems Kevin Mellon is in the early stages of his career. The art in each panel comes across as rushed and sparse, though you can certainly see improvement from the first issue to this one. He does some interesting things with technique, utilizing smudges and washes to great effect. His style works well enough with the subject matter; it could just use some polish, that's all. 'Heart' more than lives up to its name, and pulls off that most magical of narrative tricks: it tells a story which is bittersweet but uplifting without resorting to cliche and schmaltz. It has been one of the greatest surprises of the past year, especially if you're the substance over flash sort like I am.
