Are you a Hawkeye fan? Pick the issue up. Do you enjoy great art? Pick it up. Either way you’re bound to enjoy this issue in some capacity or another.

Now I’m a fan of both, so it’s only fair that this review appeals to those that are more critical and are unsure if they need to have this issue.

And the bottom line is- no.

This issue is non-essential, a filler plot-line before we delve into the main story once more next month. In my opinion it was an odd choice to pump the breaks after last months devastating cliffhanger, but that’s exactly what this issue is, a breather. It functions as our window into who the upcoming villain is, teased on the cover and in the final panels of the last issue.

But I found the story to provide no incentive to be interested in who this character was. There’s half a back-story here and then it tapers off into several pages of poorly motivated killing. There was enough information to keep me reading but not enough to make me care. The villain’s look for me is more interesting than his past at this point, and I didn’t need a justification for why he’s a menace. In fact it would be more sinister if I didn’t know anything about him.

On the art front all is well. Francesco Francavilla is single handedly bring the pulp era back into the modern rhetoric. His art/colors are beautiful and fit perfectly into the world of Hawkeye. My only gripe is that on a few of the pages the art lacked a little polish and some of the panel/page layouts took away from the coherency of the story. But minor gripes in the long run.

So all in all, should you buy this issue? It’s your money, you make the call. But either way you’re in for a good time, or you’re not missing much.

Story: 3 - Good
Art: 4 - Very Good

  1. There is some stuff that’s better illuminated in this issue….

    1) We learn Clint was talking about Kate to Grills, where in #9 we’re all led to think it was about Jessica
    2) I’ll admit that Kaz’s backstory was a bit stunted, but I liked it, with the juxtaposition of him and Kate hitting it off at her father’s party
    3) You just know that when Kate and Clint make up, there will be tension anew when she learns that the guy she’s into is the guy the Tracksuit Russians have hired to kill her mentor.

So I wouldn’t say this is non-essential reading.
