It's clear Tomasi hasn't missed a step, and may have even taken the short break to recharge his battery a bit. He starts of strong with a great action sequence (more on that in a moment) after showing Gardner in a rare moment of introspection. After this Tomasi uses his knack for pacing to ease us into what will undoubtedly be the meat and potatoes of his first few arcs; the pact between Guy, Ganthet, and Atrocitus. He dangles the secret in front of readers' noses, proving that it's much more effective to let us speculate than to give us the scoop right off the bat. In the scene where Guy makes his plea to the Guardians, Tomasi handles the blue meanies with his usual deftness, simultaneously hinting that their recent leniency may have a hidden agenda, and exhibiting that Guy may not always be smart enough to realize when they're being shifty. Also, the "punking?" line was fantastic.
The scene with Guy and Ganthet checking out the Book of the Black was a nice way to refresh us on the pact, and served to pick up some pieces from Blackest Night. The real highpoint of the issue was the two page exchange between Atrocitus and Bleez on Ysmault. The wall of rage is a sweet little quirk, and continues the trend Johns and Tomasi have going of fleshing out the New Guardians at blinding speed. Atrocitus is so deliciously evil, and to see him interact with his "red angel" Bleez (the red lantern Harley Quinn) is a nice glimpse into his ability to care for others in his own way, despite his rage. Tomasi has also showed us that he hasn't forgotten about Sodam Yat, a concept that holds a great deal of potential. Another interesting angle that Tomasi has thrown in is the possibility of some residual rage left over from Guy's bout with the red ring. This will no doubt have a continuing impact on Guy's future, and it's something to keep an eye on. Also who was he talking to during that recording? Ice? Kyle? Intriguing.
Perhaps the only negative about this one was it's lack of accessibility for new readers. Tomasi does an admirable job of setting the stage, but you really can't have an empty circle on your chest to follow this one. Most of us have been on board (or caught up) since Rebirth, but there still may be some rookies who chose this as their starting point, and some could argue that this issue should've catered more to those folks. Personally, I'm glad it wasn't bogged down by exposition, and thought that the exposition that was present was handled skillfully. Another nitpick could be the lackluster cliffhanger. The idea that someone in the Unknown Sector is controlling lanterns has merit, but one can't help but feel like it's a rehash of Larfleeze's Vega System come too soon. Also, if we were supposed to know who the villain at the end was, it went right over my head. My GL knowledge is limited to post-Johns however, so maybe I missed something.
Stepping into the shoes of Patrick Gleason is no admirable task, but Fernando Pasarin fits into them like a glove. This guy knocked this issue out of the park. The action sequence with Guy rescuing the scientists proved that he and Tomasi can coordinate brilliantly. Everything from the laser blasts trailing Guy motorcycle construct to the hyperspace point of perspective was pure eye candy. With a subject like Guy, Pasarin can easily demonstrate his range with facial expressions, and with defined characters like Ganthet and Atrocitus, he can display his ability to stick with what works. Also, if ya can't draw aliens, you have no business working on a GL book and luckily, Pasarin has shown us that he's up to the task. Also worthy of mention are Randy Mayor's stellar coloring (another requirement for GL artists), and Rodolfo Migliari's shadowy cover. No doubt my cover of the week.
With Emerald Warriors #1, Tomasi has shown us that we can rest easy knowing our lanterns are still in capable hands, and Pasarin has shown us we need not worry about how good they will look. A great set-up for some really exciting future threads, and more proof that it's a damn good time to be a fan of the ring.

Great issue, great review.
