Wow…..Just…..Wow.

How can I express my feelings for this new issue starting a new arc? I know!

*Pffffffffffffffffftttttttttttttttttttttttt* (That’s the sound of a raspberry fyi)

What happened to this series!? It started off so well when Bedard took over for Tomasi. His writing was strong and his take on John Stewart and Cyborg Superman felt fresh. But the series has degenerated into a sloppy, unreadble mess overtime. This issue is the worst of the worst; giving some headscratching decisions. Mainly; why the hell is this involved with Brightest Day? I’m sorry but for non-readers (like myself) of that title and lack of knowning the continuity of the story; how can you follow this Weaponer story? With my limited knowledge of the White Lantern it seems very implausable that this character can use the power so freeingly like this. Even with the continuity issues; the overall writing of the characters as degenerating into something bland and unoriginal. Kyle is just a joke; it’s like reading a 90’s character in front of me. The Weaponer is not much of a villain to get across and Bedard’s take on Sinestro is laughable compaired to Geoff John’s take.

Even with the horrible writing I was not expecting the absolutely atrocious art. I knew I was not going to be in favor of a new artist; considering how Ardian Syaf was before; but I didn’t know HOW bad Kirkham was gonna be. It really is almost undescribable how bad the art is. It’s sketchy, the anatomy is so off in every panel, the faces of the characters are stiff, the action is hard to follow, and…..well just nothing works really. Even the inking and coloring looks like a newcomer has joined the industry. I don’t know who Batt is but he needs to go back to school on how to ink. Don’t let the cover fool you; even if it’s done by Kirkham the art gets 100% worse once you open the page.

So it’s safe to assume that I am dropping this series now. Bad writing and laughable art is something I can’t condone here. Especially considering just how amazing this series was so many months ago when Tomasi and Gleason was on this. Maybe it’s unfair to compare the two creators because they are so different. But let’s face it; this series is not as fun as it used to be.

  1. The Weaponer is not a character from Brightest Day, but is in fact a character who has appeared several times in the pages of previous Bedard stories. As well, considering their species are called the WEAPONERS OF QWARD and that they could make power rings, it stands to reason they can create powerful Weapopns. Hell, they made the Anti-Monitor’s super-weapon in Crisis on Infinite Earth!

  2. Let me clarify, Previous Bedard issues of Green Lantern Corps.

  3. @PraxJarvin: I know that part about Weaponer…..Let me rephrase it:

The aspects involving Brightest Day; basically the guy forging the white light into his shield, seems to be so out of place. I thought no one, not even Deadman who is the head guy it seems (unknowingly) seemed to have a grasp of it in the issues I’ve read. Here though, a guy who in all intend and purposes is a minor character, can somehow wield and unknown power source and use it like he’s had it all his life.

That was the big problem with me in the whole continuity aspect.

  4. Well he is The Weaponer.  They call him that because he can make a weapon out of anything.  This is the first story I have ever read with him in it and I could figure that out on my own pretty easily.

  5. @TNC Again, they can make power rings (as shown in the issue, and in Sinestro Corps War) so wouldn’t that hint at a greater understanding of how the power works than, say, Deadman who has never been powered by a Lantern before? You’re basing your argument on an incomplete understanding of what happened in one or two panels a few months back.

@RobbyDzwonar The Weaponers are one of my favorite old-time villains in Green Lantern, the first appeared in GL #2 way back in 61. I’ve been hoping to see a modern take on them since the GL relaunch but aside from a few quick mentions in Sinestro Corps, we never got that.

Fun fact: While I know it’s pronounced WEP-AN-UR, I really like saying WEP-AN-EARS as if they were Mouseketters.
