Glibberquip! Nooooo!!!!
So far Tony Bedard and Ardian Syaf’s run on this title has been pretty solid. It’s no Tomasi/Gleason partnership, but it’s still a good comic to read. I’ve noticed one thing though about this run so far:
Weak endings.
Now don’t worry I’m not gonna ruin or spoil the ending of this issue. However, I will state that Bedard’s issues have not felt like proper endings to the next. If anything, they feel like they would work more if you read it all in one sitting. (Or I guess trade waiting if that’s the proper term) For this issue I’ve had the same thought as last time: ‘That’s it?….I feel like I’m missing something here. That can’t be an end…’ Also, I think Bedard is showing just how pointless Kyle Rayner is. I’m sorry but I just don’t see a reason for Rayner to exist right now. Even stuck in a sun, Sodam Yat is better characterized then Rayner. With Stewart and Ganthet though, that’s the ticket you want here. This issue shows that Bedard is perfect for these two characters and Stewart has probably had more word balloons in here then the last two years combined. It’s just a shame that Rayner is kinda ruining the fun of this book.
Syaf is showing his ugly side a bit more when it comes to the violence. There is a lot of blood spilled and Syaf handles it nicely. Every issue comes out is closer to Syaf leaving the series. I’m going to miss him so much because there is so much talent being put into these pages. It helps that Syaf has a really great inking and coloring team with him. Cifuentes inks help make his pencils look even closer to Gary Frank’s style. While Mayor’s coloring really stood out for me in this issue. A great use of green in this (no duh) but also nice shades of blues as well.
While this isn’t the strongest issue of the run so far, I am still enjoying Bedard’s take so far. He really should just be handled a John Stewart book and have Ganthet by his side. Because Kyle is just not cut out for this series anymore. I’m just going to savor this book a little more though since we only have one issue to go before Syaf is gone from us forever…..or at least from this series.
