Let’s get the elephant out of the room out of the way shall we? It is very daring for Peter Tomasi to bring back one of the more controversial moments in comic book history. Although the whole ‘women in refridgerator’ has caught on as a meme of sorts for the industry; it still is a bit of a sensitive moment for some. The fact that Tomasi brings this back in this issue for Rayner and makes it all the more gut wrenching makes me realize that he is a brilliant writer. He makes us focus on just how brutal this whole moment was for his girlfriend and for the fact that Kyle couldn’t have done anything to let it not happen. He also lets Kyle forgive her and himself for what happened and I think Tomasi handled this in a civilized manner. Any writer could’ve exploited this moment for a ‘what the fuck’ type of reaction. But Tomasi handles it so seriously that it is more of a ‘closing the door’ method for this whole mess.

Bringing it back to the whole issue I thought this was a very chaotic and entertaining issue. All the lanterns trying to work together and just dealing with this mess is very fun to read. Plus it’s nice to see some interactions with the yellow and red lanterns in a ‘sane’ way and not letting everyone get in each other throats. While the ‘New Guardians’ are having problems with their members with Nekron, the rest of the Corps seem to work with each other perfectly. There are some imaginative ways to stop these Black Lanterns and eventually one of the big baddies itself. For the sake of spoilers I won’t say who they are fighting, but it definitely seems like the Corps know how to deal with such a ‘huge’ villain like this. I will admit there are some cringe worthy lines in this, especially from Guy. Overall though this was still a fun issue.

Gleason again brings out some beautiful stuff in this. The scene where the Corps try to ‘tether’ the Black Lanterns is just beautiful. He brings these ‘tethers’ back towards the end and it just gives off a very whimsical feeling. He also handles some of the more disturbing moments in this issue quite well. The fight with Ice and Guy (if you can call it that) is good and the….’Refridgerator’ moments have great layouts. I love it that Kyle was half himself and half Major Force, he handled that scene well. More great double page spreads as well, he isn’t like Ivan Reis with them but still beautiful none the less. Now I must say there are some moments where I think Gleason almost went back to his old ways. Some of the characters, Guy in particular, seem to be drawn off at points. It isn’t a major deal breaker but I almost sweated in fear thinking it was almost back to the ‘older’ Gleason I didn’t like. But it was just a minor panic and nothing else.

Off hand I can’t remember if this is the ‘final’ issue of GLC with Tomasi and Gleason. But if it is, then I am sad to see both of them leave. If it isn’t then we still have one more issue to see the greatness that has been these two for the past years. Either way this was a fun issue to read and it finally looks like the shit is going to hit the fan with the heroes getting up into Nekron’s business.

  1. Do you know when Ice died? Plus isnt she set to be in justice league international in a few weeks? -A

  2. She was brought back to death because she had died before. I would definitely say there are spoilers in this article.

  3. Thanks

  4. I thought this was Gleason’s best work. His aliens always look stellar but his humanoid characters always looked weird, especially in the face. However, this issue he seemed to really step up and provide quality work. Everything looks good and Anti-Monitor is awesome.
