Tomasi's Green Lantern Corps has been many things, but I have not often thought of it as subtle. In this case, not only is there a lot of what we've come to expect from this title with its fast pace, strong characterization and brutal action, but there were some truly sweet moments and meaningful subtext. From the Sapphire's meeting with Saarek over a piece of the Anti-Monitor where they discuss the relationship between love and death, to a subtle tribute to Steve Buscemi, and the inevitable and forbidden love story between Natu and Kyle, which is made all the more interesting when you consider that these are essentially legacy characters of Hal Jordan and Sinestro... makin' out. And, on the less subtle end of the spectrum, there's Mongul, whose appearance I always look forward to, and I'm anticipating that whole situation coming to a head quite soon in relation to some kind of retaliation by the GL Corps, as Mongul certainly isn't moving around the universe in any quiet manner. Unfortunately, Green Lantern Corps is a book that serves many plotlines, and sometimes I feel that certain elements take forever to come to fruition, it's all usually worth it in the end. And while we're on the subject of endings, it's nice that in the case of this title, the Origins and Omens back up actually adds to the story rather than taking away from it's precious pages. And we're even treated to a (subtle!) hint of a future story by Jade's appearance in the mural, and thinking what her return with the Black Lanterns could potentially mean for Kyle and his new belle. Just another thing to look forward to from a series that gives little else but things to look forward to.
Story: 4 - Very Good
Art: 3 - Good
Art: 3 - Good
If I can ask, why a 4 and not a 5?
I mean you didnt seem to knock the story at all, just curious on the score.
Great review overall though.
The art wasn’t my favorite. Not bad, but enough to make it four. Plus five for me isn’t given out easily. Interestingly, though, I meant to give Fables a 5, but I slipped and it won’t let me change it.
And if you meant that the story was a 4 and not a 5, I guess it was mainly because even though I know it will pay off eventually, the style this book is done in makes me a little impatient. I would have liked to see more of Mongul, specifically.
